Rap News 11: Australia Day (Feat. Special Correspondent Ken Oathcarn)
http://thejuicemedia.com Rap News Episode 11: Australia Day. It's a day of high jinx, high revelry and high people in Australia; a day when a large and vocal majority come together to "celebrate what's great" about this country. But what is the meaning of all this fanfare? What is the true origin of this passionately marked day of facepaint and binge drinking? Is everyone in Australia so keen on this particular anniversary? To get to bottom of these questions, and more, join your amiable host Robert Foster as he conducts a high-octane, high-frequency satellite link-up with a representative of the Mainstream Australian media: multi-Logie award-winning broadcaster, entertainer, emu-wrangler and true blue Aussie, Kenneth Oathcarn. WARNING: contains adult Australian vernacular - viewer discretion is strongly advised.

Written, produced and performed by
Hugo Farrant (Robert Foster) & Giordano Nanni (Ken Oathcarn).

I'm having a hard time giving a damn about the message in this video.

There are winners and losers in history. The losers always whine and cry about how their were mistreated X number of years ago, even though they have it pretty good today. It's time to move on, guys.

If the aboriginals are currently being mistreated in any way, I'll stand up for them. However, everything in this video seems to talk about how they were mistreated generations ago. Should we remember and document these wrongdoings? Of course. However, the whole angle on the date of Australia Day seems like a huge crock of BS cooked up by the PC police.

If there's real bigotry against the aboriginals going on today, then feel free to point it out. I'll join in with the rest of you in denouncing it. All this video seems to do, though, is suggest some kind of underlying bigotry because of the date of a certain holiday, which is a real stretch, IMO. Put up or shut up.

I don't know enough about Australia Day to comment specifically, but I just don't like the idea of claiming "winners and losers" in history. It's one thing if two cultures had a legitimate, even fight over some dispute, but the fact of the matter is that stealing land and destroying cultures is often justified by a racist worldview. I don't see how we learn any lessons from history by labeling them as "losers."

Re: Rap News 11: Australia Day (Feat. Special Correspondent Ken Oathcarn)
Unfortunately, I seem to be becoming more and more cynical over time, so keep that in mind.

In a perfect world, we could all get along. The world isn't perfect. There is war. There is conquest. There are winners and losers. But look on the bright side - at least we aren't committing genocide anymore. A few thousand years ago, war meant that the men of the losing side were killed, the women raped, and the children taken as slaves (or raped as well). War today means that the losing side gets their country rebuilt by the winner. Moreover, relatively few people are killed in today's conflicts. Despite all of the suffering we hear about in Iraq and Afghanistan, the casualties there cannot even begin to compare to previous conflicts, such as WWI, WWII, or the American Civil War.

In other words, it's hard for me to take this whining about the Aborigines seriously, taking everything into consideration.

You contradict your own cynicism a bit there by saying that relatively few people are killed in today's conflicts. That's true, though I can't remember the name of the study that found that.

I recently committed myself to work on limiting my cynical side. It's difficult, but think about this: none of the great achievements in history were attained through cynicism.
