Appreciated!
I see that I have once again stirred up a little controversy here. My day is complete.

Why's it NSFW? I can't imagine any workplace where it's cool ok to stream and watch a standup act that goes for an hour an a half using speakers instead of headphones but at the same time not cool if there is swearing in it.

I'm pretty sure Jesus was Arab. The racial insecurity of this guy really gets on my nerve.

Re: Paul Mooney: Know Your History...
If I watched it with the right mindset, then I think Mooney's argument was that Arabs ARE Black because of slavery.
Makes sense too. Couldn't have built a civilization like that without slave labour, so he does have a point. He also makes the point that we all have black blood in us as our DNA can be traced back to a point in Africa some 25-30000 years or so. "Nobody hates like Family".
On the contrary, I don't think Mooney is insecure but rather so proud of his heritage that he takes it to the extreme (or at least what society has decided is extreme - namely, to talk about it.)

Re: Paul Mooney: Know Your History...
I think that like all comedians the more controversy they generate the more money they'll make. I always find it amusing when people let comedians get under their skin. Having said that, I may still offer rebuttal: if you were to quote the Bible, Jesus was a Jew (which, last time I checked, was a race). I dunno, just throwing that out there.
Re: Paul Mooney: Know Your History...
I wasn't sure if you were right or wrong, so I looked it up.
I thought I has seen enough funny website names for one lifetime, but I was wrong.
www.jewfaq.org makes me giggle.
To get back on track though, according to at least one jew who knows how to build a website, judaism is not a race. http://www.jewfaq.org/judaism.htm#Race

Re: Paul Mooney: Know Your History...
That entry seem inconclusive and contradictory. Which should be considered prevalent, the legal or popular opinion? As for popular opinion, I've known and/or dated many Jews, and they seem to have pretty consistent solidarity. My girlfriend is, as she describes herself, a Jew, though she does not practice Judaism. She is also a Bio-Chem major. I DON'T however, imply that Judaism is a race for the purpose of generalization or judgment, and feel myself that the term "race" is outdated and inaccurate, as there is about as much difference (genetically speaking) between any one race and another as there is between a blonde and a brunette (which is to say, an almost immeasurably tiny difference). The human race as a whole shares approximately 95% (or 98.5%, depending on who you talk to) with chimpanzees, half of our DNA with bananas. That IS a pretty funny URL.

Re: Paul Mooney: Know Your History...
Not only that, but Cleopatra was ethnically Greek, or so I've heard from my professor.

Re: Paul Mooney: Know Your History...
I think what some people fail to appreciate is Paul Mooney is NOT making any claims or points about ethnic or national origin. He's making points about race, which is a social construct. Lumping all Africans together and deciding they would all be Black similar to lumping most Europeans together as white are historical. Power relations, exploitation and the need for ideological justification are why this was done. He also says that people from the Carribbean, Cubans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, are also "niggas" because they were forced into speaking someone else's language and exploited by European colonists. When he draws parallels to Jesus and Cleopatra, he's of course applying a concept that didn't really exist as it does now then. People hated each other, but it was different. Now, however, an Arab and a Greek-Egyptian are seen as Black, as being outside of "real" civilization. Racial insecurity has little to do with it. Race is a social phenomenon, which has almost nothing to do with genes and almost everything to do with power and those who write the narratives.
